FINDING OPIUM
Bath's Hidden Bar · Near Pulteney Bridge
The Journal · 27 June 2026
The bar you have to know about to find
Of all the bars near Pulteney Bridge, the one most worth finding is the one you can walk straight past. Opium is a hidden bar in Bath with no neon, no chalkboard of two-for-ones, no doorman waving you in. We are a speakeasy in Bath in the truest sense, a candlelit warren of vaulted cellars beneath Grove Street, a minute's wander from the bridge, where the city's best known secret keeps its low, theatrical glow behind an unmarked door.
If you have heard whispers and want to descend for yourself, here is your map. Consider this the gentlest of spoilers: we will tell you exactly what to look for, and trust you to keep the rest to yourself.

Crossing the bridge, then down
Start at Pulteney Bridge, that Palladian curiosity lined with little shops, where the weir roars below. From the city side, slip onto Grove Street, the quiet lane that runs along the back. Where the Georgian stonework meets the pavement, look for a discreet door and a single amber lamp. There is no grand signage; that is rather the point.
Push the door and the street noise falls away. A stair winds down into the old vaults, plum and oxblood, flickering candles, glass-eyed taxidermy and curiosities watching from the shadows. By the time you reach the bottom, you have left modern Bath entirely and stepped into something Victorian, bohemian and a little bit wicked.
What to look for
- The lane, not the high street. Opium is tucked off Grove Street, behind Pulteney Bridge, not on a main parade. If you are walking past busy windows and bright frontages, you have gone too far. Double back toward the river.
- An unmarked door, softly lit. No menu in the window, no queue rope. Just an amber glow and the faint promise of a cellar below. That understatement is the invitation.
- The descent. Once inside, you go down. The vaults are beneath street level, which is why the candlelight feels so complete and the city above disappears so quickly.
- After dark. We open from 5pm. The bar is at its most atmospheric once the light has gone and the candles do all the work, so an evening visit rewards you most.
Why we stay hidden
A speakeasy is half drink, half theatre. The thrill of an unmarked door is that it makes every guest a confidant, you found us because you knew, or because someone trusted you with the secret. We have leaned into that ever since: bespoke craft cocktails mixed to your mood, a cellar full of gin, wine and beer, and rooms that feel less like a bar and more like a particular kind of dream. It is why 505 guests have left us 4.6 stars on Google, and why so many of them describe the same thing, the delight of the descent.
For the deeply curious, there is more below the surface still: a private Secret Room that seats up to fifteen with its own bartender and karaoke, and intimate cocktail masterclasses if you would rather shake your own. You can read more about us on the about page, or simply start at the beginning.
